POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (TCD) -- Police reportedly discovered materials used to make explosive devices in the hotel room of two men who allegedly shot and killed a man visiting his child at college.
According to the Poughkeepsie Police Department, on Sunday, Oct. 2, at 7:30 a.m., officers received a call about a shots fired at the Courtyard Marriott on South Road. When police arrived, they found a male victim inside and transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police said there was no active threat to the hotel, and the gunfire went off "within and outside of the establishment."
While searching the hotel, police reportedly found a room that contained "manuals related to the making of explosive devices, as well as materials with the potential to be used as explosives."
In an update, Poughkeepsie Police negated reports that there had been an argument, saying, "At this point of the investigation, the shooting appears to have been unprovoked."
The Poughkeepsie Journal identified the victim as Paul Kutz, and said he was in town for "family weekend" at nearby Marist College. Thirty-five-year-old Roy Johnson was reportedly arrested and charged with murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
Kutz reportedly suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and torso.
The second suspect, 26-year-old Devin Taylor, was reportedly taken into custody for second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
According to Poughkeepsie Police, the Dutchess County District Attorney's Office convened a grand jury and "proceedings are currently underway."
Police described Taylor and Kutz as homeless, and said they used the terminology "for instances in which the fixed permanent home address of defendants cannot be established."
The two men are reportedly "mostly transient and there is not a fixed address for either defendant."
Kutz and Taylor are reportedly in custody at the Dutchess County Jail.
