SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (KNXV/AP) -- Police say a former professional baseball player sought in the shooting death of his ex-girlfriend in a Phoenix suburb was found dead Saturday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the Grand Canyon.
Scottsdale Police said the body of Charles Haeger, 37, was discovered about 4 p.m. on a trail along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon in northern Arizona.
Police said they were seeking Haeger on suspicion of murder and aggravated assault in the fatal shooting Friday. The victim was identified by police Saturday night as Danielle Breed, 34.
KNXV reports around 7 p.m. Friday, officers responded to a shots fired call at a residence on Via De Sonrisa, near Hayden Road and McCormick Parkway. When officers arrived they were informed that a suspect may still be inside the residence. A Scottsdale PD SWAT team was called out to assist in a possible barricade situation.
Once inside, they located Danielle Breed, who had been killed.
Investigators say a male roommate returned to his residence after hearing multiple gunshots coming from the victim's bedroom. Moments later, the roommate says, Breed's ex-boyfriend, identified as Haeger, exited the room holding a handgun. Authorities say Haeger then pointed it at the roommate. The roommate was able to escape through a back door and call 911 at a neighbor's residence.
Haeger's vehicle was found earlier Saturday afternoon near Flagstaff, and his body was then located along the trail.
According to MLB.com, Haeger was a pitcher drafted by the Chicago White Sox in 2001, and he played 83 innings in the major leagues.
