SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (TCD) -- A 67-year-old man was arrested for allegedly suffocating his wife with a plastic bag before attempting to kill himself.
According to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the 200 block of Ranier Drive on Friday at 1:30 p.m. regarding a possible overdose. Upon arrival, deputies reportedly found a deceased woman and an unresponsive man.
According to WSPA-TV, the woman was later identified as 65-year-old Patricia Lucas Berry by the coroner’s office.
The unresponsive man and suspect, Carl Fredrick Berry Jr., was reportedly revived by EMS and rushed to the hospital for treatment.
The Sheriff’s Office said that the evidence gathered at the scene "suggested the female’s death wasn’t a natural one, and that the incident appeared to be a murder and attempted suicide."
After becoming stable at the hospital, Berry reportedly confessed that he suffocated his wife by placing a plastic bag over her head. The Sheriff’s Office said he then told investigators he tried to commit suicide by overdosing.
Berry was reportedly discharged from the hospital on Tuesday, Nov. 30, around 4:40 p.m. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Berry’s motive for the crime is still under investigation.
Berry was booked into the Spartanburg County Detention Center, where he remains held on no bond.
