GRADY COUNTY, Okla. (TCD) -- A woman who was put in handcuffs for allegedly behaving erratically reportedly managed to escape the cuffs and then open fire at deputies using their assault rifle.
According to KFOR-TV, on Friday, Aug. 12, at approximately 11:45 a.m., Grady County deputies responded to a home near Bridge Creek for a mental health call. Oklahoma Highway Patrol official Eric Foster said law enforcement officers felt the woman, later identified as Racheal Zion Clay, "wasn’t safe," so she was placed in custody.
When Clay got in the police car, however, she reportedly "somehow got the opportunity to slip her handcuffs and get to a firearm and started to fire on law enforcement officers and on other civilians in the area."
KWTV-TV reports Clay allegedly used an AR-15 that had been in the front part of the car and shot out the window.
Grady County Undersheriff Gary Boggess said a bullet "did a ricochet off the tree and then glanced off and hit my deputy in the back of the neck and then also hit the civilian in the chest."
The Grady County Sheriff’s Office confirmed one deputy was shot and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. He was discharged that same evening. KWTV says the civilian was released from the hospital Saturday, Aug. 13.
A standoff ensued for almost five hours until Clay surrendered at 4:45 p.m.
Boggess told KWTV Clay was allegedly "in the front yard barking like a dog and crawling on the ground" when deputies first arrived.
KFOR, which cites court documents, reports Clay allegedly yelled, "Answer the phone. You let her die. I’m not human, you killed her."
While barricading herself in the deputy’s car, she allegedly wrote notes on paper and placed them in the window, some of which said, "I killed one," and "Kill any cop that tries to approach," among others.
Grady County Jail records show Clay was booked on a charge of shooting with intent to kill. Her bond is set at $100,000.
