CAZENOVIA, Wis. (TCD) -- Deputies arrested a 61-year-old man on suspicion of killing his 54-year-old brother-in-law at a campground last month.
According to a news release from the Richland County Sheriff’s Office, on Thursday, May 25, at around 9:30 a.m., officials found Corby Neef deceased with multiple gunshot wounds at Bunker Hill Campground. Several law enforcement agencies helped process the scene, and authorities determined Neef’s injuries "were not self-inflicted."
The Sheriff’s Office identified two people of interest at the scene and took them in for questioning. Deputies arrested David Harp on suspicion of Neef’s slaying, and he was booked into the Richland County Jail on a charge of first-degree reckless homicide. The second person of interest was released without charges.
The victim’s family told WKOW-TV that Neef was Harp’s brother-in-law.
According to a complaint obtained by the news source, Harp was camping with a woman and Neef, and the three had been drinking heavily the night before. The woman reportedly told authorities she was "very intoxicated," so she went to bed around 10 p.m., while Neef and Harp stayed up and hung out outside.
Harp allegedly told officials he doesn’t recall shooting Neef, but he showed an officer his handgun inside his camper. According to WKOW, Harp said he usually kept the weapon in his car’s center console, and officers later noticed his vehicle’s center console was open.
Deputies reportedly recovered two shell casings near Harp’s car that matched his gun, but they did not locate a firearm near Neef’s body.
Harp’s bond was initially set at $250,000, but a judge reportedly ordered it be reduced to $40,000. He faces up to 25 years in prison and $100,000 in fines if convicted.
