RED LAKE, Minn. (TCD) -- A 35-year-old mother has been indicted on charges in connection with the stabbing death of one of her sons and the smoke inhalation death of another on the Red Lake Indian Reservation.
According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Minnesota, on March 15, Jennifer Stately allegedly stabbed two of her sons, killing one, while the other suffered non-fatal stab wounds. Jennifer Stately then allegedly set their home on fire, and the second injured son died from smoke inhalation as a result. The Star Tribune identifies the two deceased boys as 6-year-old Remi Stately and 5-year-old Tristan Stately.
Stately reportedly took off with a third son, a 3-year-old child, and fled the scene in her car. Officials issued an Amber Alert for Jennifer Stately and her toddler, Ethan Stately, later that evening. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, a motorist noticed Stately's vehicle and reported it to authorities. Law enforcement reportedly performed a traffic stop on Stately and found her toddler son with injuries and signs of child neglect.
Stately faces one count of premeditated murder, one count of murder in the course of committing child abuse, one count of murder in the course of committing arson, one count of arson, and one count of felony child neglect. She remains in custody pending further proceedings.
Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Superintendent Drew Evans said, "This case is another example of how Amber Alerts save lives. They get critical information out quickly to millions of Minnesotans willing to step up to help rescue a child in mortal danger."
