DETROIT (TCD) -- Two men are in custody in connection with the alleged rape and beating of a 63-year-old woman left to die outside an empty church.
According to a press conference from Detroit Police Chief James White, the victim, later identified as Shirley Bryant, was found in the early morning hours of Nov. 14 and "was left there for dead." Bryant reportedly remains in critical condition as she fights for her life.
According to WJBK-TV, Bryant called for help on Joy Road near Mackinaw Street, and a person walking by heard and found her near the vacant church. Bryant was reportedly semi-naked and had suffered hypothermia and massive head trauma.
WJBK reports that Bryant was visiting her son for her birthday at the time of the attack and was severely beaten and sexually assaulted. Bryant and the two suspects were reportedly acquaintances.
White said two people are in custody, including 44-year-old Elvin Shepherd. He’s been charged with assault with intent to murder. He was reportedly arraigned and is being held on a $250,000 bond.
The second suspect is "being held for an unrelated charge to this case," but investigators have enough evidence that points directly to him being at the scene when the crime occurred, White said.
According to WJBK, Shepard is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 6 for a probable cause conference.
