IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. (TCD) -- A former science teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a student is in custody again following a car crash in which she was with two juveniles.
According to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office, on Saturday, May 13, deputies responded to the 700 block of Mocksville Highway to a report of a car crash. Two juveniles had reportedly fled the scene. The adult passenger, Elizabeth Bailey, 37, admitted to authorities she had been drinking at the time of the accident, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Officials located the two juveniles. One of them, the driver, had an outstanding secure custody order and was booked into the Alexander County Detention Center.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies and members of the Sheriff’s Office Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Team responded to Bailey’s home and took her into custody "because she was under court order to stay away from one of the juveniles in the vehicle."
Bailey was booked into the Iredell County Detention Center on a charge of violation of pretrial release. She was also reportedly cited for misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor and a misdemeanor for allowing an unlicensed driver to drive.
In an update, the Sheriff’s Office said Bailey was released from custody.
Prior to the car accident, an investigation was launched in July 2022 alleging Bailey, a former science teacher at Northview Academy, committed statutory rape against a student, WBTV-TV reports. She was initially charged with statutory rape of a person who is 15 years old or younger, felony indecent liberties with a minor, and felony sexual activity with a student.
After learning more about an alleged relationship between Bailey and a student, Bailey was also reportedly charged with felony statutory sex offense with a child under 15 and misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Bailey was released on $75,000 bond, put on electronic house arrest, and ordered to stay away from the alleged juvenile victim.
However, in September 2022, the Sheriff’s Office said they learned the juvenile had allegedly been to Bailey’s home "on nine occasions since her original arrest" in August 2022.
Bailey was arrested again in September 2022 and charged with nine counts of misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor, nine counts of felony intimidating or interfering with a state witness, and nine counts of felony violation of pretrial release conditions.
