Unsolved: Murder mystery on eve of NASCAR Talladega race

TALLADEGA COUNTY, Ala. (WVTM) -- It's been years since someone murdered Theresa Benn and police are still working to find her killer.

A woman goes missing near the Talladega Superspeedway on the eve of one of the biggest NASCAR races of the year and is later found murdered.

Theresa Benn's estranged husband admits he left her in the middle of nowhere that night, Oct. 19, 2014, after a heated argument. But what happened before and after that time is still in question.

Thousands of crazed southern NASCAR fans gather for the biggest party of the year at a gigantic makeshift campground near the famous Talladega Superspeedway, a beer-guzzling Alabama weekend filled with bonfires, booze and sleepless Talladega nights.

Just a short distance away from the warm glow of trackside bonfires and comfy campers, Theresa Benn disappears.

Benn, the 42-year-old estranged wife of Kevin Dulaney and mother of three children was later found dead. Her lifeless body was fished out of a creek just a few miles downstream from the very spot her husband admits he abandoned his wife of seven years.

"They had been to a bar in another county and there was video footage of them there. We know they were there. They left and came to Talladega County," said Amanda Crow, Lincoln Police Department. "Kevin and Theresa left the bar approximately 12:45 to 1 a.m."

Kevin told police that shortly after leaving the bar, Theresa and Kevin got into an argument while driving near the racetrack. According Kevin, Theresa wanted to extend the evening by joining the campground party at the race track.

"On October 19th Theresa been was reported missing by her husband, Kevin Dulaney," said Lincoln Police Investigator Amanda Crow. "He claimed he dropped her off at the intersection of Speedway Boulevard and Eastaboga Road, and that her intentions were to go to the racetrack, and she had not been seen or heard from since."

Investigators and volunteers dug through the backwoods and creeks within a three-mile radius of her last known location on horseback to cover areas where police vehicles could not obtain access.

Police had tried just about everything they could to try to find Theresa Benn. Then, out of nowhere, Amanda Crow got a call.

"Her body was found approximately three and a half miles from where he said he let her out of the vehicle," said Crow. "Once we got her out we knew it was a homicide."

Police will not specific details of Theresa's murder with Crime Watch Daily or the public until Theresa's killer is captured. Kevin Dulaney has not been named a suspect.
