ORLANDO, Fla. (TCD) -- A 10-year-old girl was arrested on suspicion of killing a woman who was allegedly arguing with the suspect’s mother.
According to the Orange and Osceola Counties State Attorney’s Office, the girl allegedly grabbed her mom’s gun to fatally shoot Lashun Rodgers on Memorial Day, May 30. State Attorney Monique Worrell called the incident "one of the most tragic cases I have seen in my 22-year career."
The girl has not been formally charged, the but the State Attorney’s Office said they are "reviewing this case and will consider all of the facts, including the age of the child, and all of the surrounding circumstances, when making a charging decision."
WKMG-TV reports the shooting occurred at the Jernigan Garden Apartments on Mercy Drive. Lakrisha Isaac, the girl’s mother, reportedly got into an argument with Rodgers inside an apartment. Isaac allegedly gave her daughter a bag, which supposedly contained a gun. WKMG reports Isaac allegedly punched Rodgers, and Rodgers reciprocated.
Orlando Police reportedly told WKMG that Rodgers' boyfriend attempted to intervene and stop the fight, but Rodgers broke free, which is when the girl allegedly shot her twice.
Orange County Jail records show Isaac was also taken into custody on charges of negligent storage of a firearm, aggravated assault by a firearm, neglect of a child, and manslaughter by culpable negligence.
Worrell said in her statement her office will "ensure [the suspect] receives the interventions necessary to address her behavior, help her change and grow, and ensure the public’s safety going forward."
