MEMPHIS, Tenn. (TCD) -- A 30-year-old man is accused of killing his roommate after the man’s body was discovered inside a suitcase near a Midtown dumpster.
Memphis Police said they responded to a "suspicious call" at Pine and Eastmoreland on Dec. 12 at approximately 9:50 p.m. and found the suitcase with a body inside. According to a tweet from the Memphis Police Department, preliminary information suggests the victim was "struck with an object by a known suspect."
On Dec. 20, Memphis Police identified the victim as 63-year-old Bruce Jeffries.
According to WREG-TV, a witness reportedly told police that they saw the suspect, Julian Summers, drag a suitcase through an alleyway and try to throw it out, but it looked too heavy. Summers reportedly saw the witness and ran away.
Investigators reportedly located a blood trail that led to the Broadmoor Apartment building and found signs of a struggle inside the unit. WHBQ-TV reports there was no indication of forced entry, but investigators saw broken glass and blood in the apartment. They also found a smaller version of the suitcase used to hold Jeffries.
WREG reports Summers and Jeffries lived together for two years.
Shelby County Jail records show Summers was booked on charges of second-degree murder, tampering with/fabricating evidence, and abuse of a corpse. His bond is set at $750,000.
