WACO, Texas (KIAH) -- A missing Texas boy whose body was found in a Dumpster may have been dead for four days before his mother reported him missing, according to Waco Police.
According to the arrest affidavit for Laura Sanchez, the mother of 2-year-old Frankie Gonzales, she called police on Monday, June 1, saying the child had disappeared from Cameron Park in Waco.
When police and volunteers could not find the child, Sgt. Jason Lundquist says Sanchez told him that Frankie had spent the weekend with her adult son in Killeen. Lundquist said Sanchez's brother called him on Tuesday and said she confessed about the death of Frankie. During a police interview, Sanchez allegedly admitted she was the only one taking care of Frankie when he died on May 28.
According to the affidavit, Sanchez said she kept the boy's body in her house until May 30, and then placed him in the Dumpster behind a church near the intersection of 27th and Alice.
Laura Sanchez was booked into jail on first-degree felony injury to a child charge, Waco Police said. Police said there could be more charges against Sanchez at a later date.
Sanchez called 911 and reported her son missing Monday at about 1:53 p.m., KXAS-TV reports, saying he was last seen at a splash pad at Cameron Park. She said she turned away briefly, looked back and he was gone.
Police said the initial call came from Cameron Park in Waco, but Gonzales was never at the park and that it was likely a diversion set up by Sanchez.
Police said the boy's exact cause of death is not yet known.
