Columbia Ph.D. student fatally stabbed coming home from soccer practice; another injured

NEW YORK (TCD) -- A grad student at Columbia University was fatally stabbed Thursday, and a second victim sustained stab wounds.
Columbia University confirmed the news about the Ph.D. student in a statement. Davide Giri, who studied at the School of Engineering and Applied Science, was reportedly walking near West 123rd Street and Amsterdam Avenue when he was attacked. The university called the incident "unspeakably sad and deeply shocking."
According to CBS New York, Giri was attacked near Morningside Park at approximately 11 p.m. and was taken to the hospital in critical condition but died from his wounds. New York City Police Department officials reportedly told CBS New York that a second victim was stabbed near West 110th Street and Columbus Avenue. That person, a 27-year-old Italian tourist, went to the hospital and is expected to survive.
NYPD reportedly located the suspect holding a knife to a third person near Central Park.
CBS New York reports the suspect is 25-year-old Vincent Pinkney. He reportedly has been arrested 16 other times and was out on parole.
According to WPIX-TV, the suspect is allegedly a member of the Everybody Killas gang.

Columbia University announced Friday the public safety office will add additional patrols.
Giri played for the New York International Football team, who paid tribute to him on social media Friday. They described him as a "lovely teammate and pillar of the club" and the "nicest and brightest person on the team."
