North Carolina man calls 911 and admits to killing father and uncle: Sheriff

HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (TCD) -- A 27-year-old man reportedly called 911 and admitted to killing his father and uncle Sunday night.

According to a press conference from Henderson County Sheriff Lowell Griffin, Garrett Robert Eley reported gunshots at 39 Beaumont Drive, advising that he was responsible for the shooting. In the press conference, Sheriff Griffin described the call as "unusual" because of Garrett’s confession and "eerily calm" nature.

Upon arrival, the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office says deputies located two victims that had been fatally shot, 60-year-old Stephen Robert Eley and 57-year-old Brian Eugene Eley, identified as Garrett’s father and uncle.

According to Sheriff Griffin, Garrett forced and locked his grandparents, Robert and Patricia Barker, in the bathroom. They were reportedly transported to the hospital for evaluation, but no injuries are known at this time. Sheriff Griffin says Garrett’s motive is unknown, and investigators don’t know how long the victims were dead nor how long the grandparents were locked in the bathroom.

Sheriff Griffin said in a press conference that authorities believe Garrett used a "high-powered rifle" and that there were several firearms in the home.

Deputies detained Garrett Robert Eley at the scene and charged him with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree kidnapping. According to the Sheriff’s Office, he was booked into the Henderson County Detention Facility with no bond.

According to Sheriff Griffin, all individuals involved, including Garrett, lived together at 39 Beaumont Drive.

The investigation remains ongoing. Garrett was scheduled to appear in court Monday, Nov. 22.
