Nevada psychologist takes manslaughter plea after wife died from ingesting antifreeze, opioids

LAS VEGAS (TCD) -- A psychologist from Henderson accused of killing his wife with opioids and antifreeze faces prison time after entering an Alford plea for voluntary manslaughter.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports Gregory "Brent" Dennis' plea means there is evidence to prove his guilt, but he can prevent pleading guilty. Prosecutor Marc DiGiacomo and Dennis' attorney Richard Schonfeld reportedly agreed to three to 10 years in prison as a sentence, but the judge will get the final say in his term length.

According to KLAS-TV, Dennis' wife Susan Winters was found dead in their Henderson home in January 2015, and her death was initially ruled a suicide.

Dennis reportedly searched online how long it would take a person to die from ingesting chemicals in antifreeze, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. He also reportedly was addicted to cocaine and other drugs. DiGiacomo said Dennis drove to a location where he was known to have purchased oxycodone and cocaine. DiGiacomo alleged Dennis "waited for her to stop breathing" and then called 911. He reportedly gave a do-not-resuscitate order when she was taken to the hospital.

KLAS reports Winters had so much antifreeze in her system it could have killed her two times over, as well as a large amount of oxycodone.

Winters' parents, who are reportedly principal owners of Sonic, conducted a private investigation into her death. KLAS reports a few days before she died, she reportedly contacted Dennis' drug dealer and also threatened to report her husband to the medical board because of his drug use. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Dennis was set to inherit $2 million from Winters' estate, which also included a $1 million life insurance policy.

Days after she died, Dennis reportedly deposited $180,000 into his bank account that reportedly came from Winters' money because "he knew that when she died, her parents would freeze that account."

Dennis' sentencing is scheduled for May 10.
