CAYCE, S.C. (WGHP) -- South Carolina authorities say 6-year-old Faye Marie Swetlik died of asphyxiation within hours of her abduction.
Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher told reporters Tuesday that Swetlik died just a few hours after she was abducted.
First-grader Faye Marie Swetlik had been playing outside her home when she went missing on Feb. 10. Searchers found her body on Thursday, Feb. 13, in the woods nearby moments before a neighbor was found dead in his home.
Police believed their deaths were connected after they found something that belonged to Faye in Taylor's trash. Officials said they found a child's polka-dot boot and a soup ladle with freshly dug dirt on it, WSOC reports.
The girl's body was found in the woods, and police think it was put there after investigators found the evidence inside the trash can, Cayce Public Safety Sgt. Evan Antley said at a Friday news conference.
Antley didn't directly link the death of 30-year-old Coty Scott Taylor, whose body was found at his home, to the girl's killing. But Antley said the item found in Taylor's trash Thursday was something listed on the missing person flyer created after she disappeared. He did not specify exactly what it was.
Antley did not characterize how Taylor died.
