DANA POINT, Calif. (TCD) -- A 39-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly hit a bicyclist with his car, then stabbed him to death following the collision.
According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 3:02 p.m., deputies were called to Pacific Coast Highway and Crown Valley Parkway in Dana Point after receiving a call about a collision and assault. They located 58-year-old Michael John Mammone in the street suffering from "severe injuries." He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
The Sheriff’s Department said Mammone was riding his bike on Pacific Coast Highway when Vanroy Evan Smith allegedly struck him from behind. Then, Smith allegedly got out of his car and stabbed Mammone. Bystanders restrained him until deputies arrived and took him into custody on suspicion of murder.
Officials reportedly located a knife at the scene they believe was used in the deadly stabbing.
The Sheriff’s Department said in the statement there is "no known connection between the suspect and the victim."
According to KTLA-TV, Mammone worked at Providence Mission Hospital in Laguna Beach as an emergency room physician.
A hospital spokesperson told KTLA in a statement, "The entire Mission Hospital family is grieving over the loss of an incredible physician and friend. We will honor Dr. Mammone’s dedication to our community and passion for medicine by continuing to provide exceptional care."
