NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (TCD) -- A 30-year-old woman pleaded guilty to allegedly attempting to kill her 74-year-old husband in 2020, whom she married for citizenship.
According to the Westchester County District Attorney's Office, Olivia Raimo of Jamaica married a New Rochelle resident, who remained unnamed, in 2017. The District Attorney's Office says on Jan. 24, 2020, Raimo allegedly pushed her husband, "wedging him between the toilet seat and a wall, and then slit his wrist with a straight razor."
The man's home health aide reportedly arrived at his residence when the attack occurred, but Raimo reportedly did not let her in. The aide reportedly called police because she did not recognize Raimo or know her. New Rochelle Police Department officers arrived on scene and went into the home after hearing the victim "screaming from the bathroom."
The District Attorney's Office says the victim was transported to Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx. He reportedly required two surgeries to reattach the tendons in his arms, but ultimately lost all function in his hand.
The attack reportedly occurred after a meeting with a lawyer to discuss the couple's upcoming interview with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. They reportedly had to "demonstrate their marriage was legitimate," but the attorney reportedly told them "they would have a hard time passing their marriage interview."
New Rochelle Police took Raimo into custody Feb. 11, 2020. On Nov. 15, she pleaded guilty to attempted murder in the second degree and will be sentenced to 15 years in state prison with five years of post-release supervision.
Her sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 13, 2022.
