SEATTLE (TCD) -- A 32-year-old convicted felon was arrested after the remains of a 56-year-old missing woman were allegedly discovered near the University of Washington.
According to a news release from the Seattle Police Department, on Monday, June 20, at approximately 2:30 p.m., officers responded to an area near the University of Washington by Ravenna Avenue NE and NE 45th Street. At the scene, authorities reportedly located human remains.
Police said the remains were transferred to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office and were positively identified as a 56-year-old woman. It was determined the woman, Mavis Boots Kindness Nelson, was fatally stabbed, and her death was ruled a homicide, KOMO-TV reports. The remains were allegedly mutilated as well.
The victim’s family told KOMO Nelson had been missing for a month before her remains were discovered.
Upon further investigation, authorities were reportedly able to identify a suspect, Charles Becker, because of DNA evidence found at the scene. Becker’s DNA was already on file after he was convicted in the death of his infant son in 2015, KOMO reports.
In an interview, Becker reportedly told investigators that he brought the victim to his home with another person, and she died by "homicidal means," and "that the body remained at the location for a long time before it was eventually removed from his apartment."
According to police, Becker was arrested on Oct. 4 and booked into the King County Jail. He was reportedly charged with murder and remains held on $5 million bail. The investigation remains ongoing.
