CHARLES CITY, Iowa (TCD) -- Authorities identified the woman who was killed in a suspected murder-suicide by her ex-husband on Oct. 12.
According to the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, 44-year-old Jennifer Jo Swingen was found dead at her ex-husband’s home on Shaw Avenue after her family members reported her missing earlier this month.
The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that Charles City Police responded to the residence on Oct. 12 at approximately 3:30 p.m. for a welfare check. While there, authorities reportedly discovered Jennifer’s ex-husband, 46-year-old Shane Swingen, in critical condition from a possible drug overdose. He was rushed to a hospital and later died.
KCHA-TV says officers conducted a search of Shane’s home and discovered Jennifer’s body inside. Charles City Police Chief Hugh Anderson says the incident is being treated as a murder-suicide.
The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that after an autopsy, the Iowa State Examiner’s Office concluded Jennifer died of strangulation.
Shane and Jennifer reportedly married in July 2018 but filed for divorce in December 2019. Their divorce was reportedly finalized that month. Shane allegedly moved to Charles City while Jennifer resided in Dunkerton, just south of Cedar Rapids.
