HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (TCD) -- A 56-year-old man is accused of shooting at his neighbor’s home because their dogs were barking.
According to a news release from the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office, on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at around 1:18 a.m., deputies responded to a report of shots fired at a home on the 12700 block of Cedar Grove Court. There, the homeowners reportedly said they heard "loud bangs at the front door followed by gunshots."
One of the homeowners, Mike Gerica, told KHOU-TV the suspect shot 46 rounds into his home while his five kids were sleeping.
The suspect, Russell Day, allegedly shouted, "Open the effin’ door and no one gets hurt," and Gerica got his pistol while his wife called 911.
The bullets reportedly punctured the door and left holes in the drywall, but the family was unharmed.
The Constable’s Office said Day fled the scene as deputies arrived, but they later performed a traffic stop on Day’s vehicle, where they found ammunition along with an AR-15-style rifle.
Day, who was intoxicated during the traffic stop, was taken into custody and booked into the Harris County Jail for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, the Constable’s Office said.
During an interview, Day reportedly told investigators he was upset that his neighbor’s dogs "were barking all day."
According to KHOU, captured surveillance video showed the suspect’s son telling his father he was shooting the wrong house. Tesha Koltys, an acquaintance of Day, told KHOU she believed the bullets were meant for her home.
