QUINCY, Mass. (TCD) -- A 32-year-old woman was recently convicted in the 2018 beating death of her 11-month-old niece.
On Feb. 15, 2018, the Quincy Police Department responded to a home on Sewall Street, where they found the victim, Chloe Chen. Chen was reportedly transported to the Boston Medical Center, where she died two days later, on Feb. 17, 2018.
Then, on March 22, 2018, police arrested Shu Feng Hsu on charges of assault and battery on a child causing serious bodily injury.
According to the Norfolk District Attorney, Hsu was living with seven family members in the home, including her niece Chen. Hsu was reportedly babysitting the victim "when she called 911 to report that the baby was in distress."
An autopsy later revealed Chen "died due to the infliction of trauma, including to her head."
According to the Patriot Ledger, Chen suffered bruising to her face and head, and she endured brain damage. The baby also reportedly suffered multiple seizures and ultimately died from injuries and bleeding in her brain.
Detectives reportedly reviewed more than 100 hours of camera surveillance footage but didn’t see the incident. However, the District Attorney’s Office said that a device "captured an extended period of audio of the child crying" and that "Hsu then entered the room, and the device captured multiple thuds in the room –– after which the baby fell silent."
On March 24, a jury found Hsu guilty of manslaughter, and she faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. According to the Patriot Ledger, state prosecutors initially sought a charge for murder.
Hsu’s sentencing is set for March 30.
