DENVER (TCD) -- A 20-year-old convicted of fatally shooting a teenager and injuring eight others during a 2019 school shooting was sentenced Friday to life in prison without the possibility of parole plus 1,282.5 years.
According to KUSA-TV, Douglas County Judge Theresa Slade told Devon Erickson, "I obviously disagree that imposing a sentence that may seem academic is a waste of time. I hope that it accomplishes the goal of the legislature, and my intentions today, which is to make sure this never happens again."
Erickson was convicted of 46 charges, which included murder, conspiracy to commit murder, 31 counts of criminal attempt to commit murder, conspiracy to commit theft, and more, KDVR-TV reports.
Another student who was convicted in the shooting, Alec McKinney, was sentenced to life in prison in June 2020, KCNC-TV reported at the time.
Erickson opened fire in an English class at STEM School Highlands Ranch on May 7, 2019. Student Kendrick Castillo was shot and killed while trying to stop Erickson from shooting more students, according to KCNC.
