Alabama police officer accused of fatally shooting pregnant girlfriend in the head

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (TCD) -- An off-duty officer with the Huntsville Police Department is accused of fatally shooting his pregnant girlfriend in the head on Jan. 7.
The Huntsville Police Department said in a statement that the State Bureau of Investigation will oversee the investigation into Officer David McCoy. He was placed on administrative leave.
Law enforcement officials reportedly told WHNT-TV that McCoy's girlfriend was sitting in a car outside Weston Ranch Apartments in Madison when she was killed. A family member reportedly identified the victim as 26-year-old Courtney Spraggins. She was reportedly seven months pregnant with their child.
WHNT reports McCoy works as a courtesy officer at Weston Ranch Apartments and called 911 about shots fired. He reportedly said she committed suicide. Investigators reportedly found a photo of McCoy in her car as well as text messages that provided additional details to the case.
According to AL.com, an autopsy is scheduled for Jan. 10 at the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. Madison County Coroner Tyler Berryhill reportedly said in a statement, "The case is being investigated as a homicide."
Madison County Jail records show McCoy was charged with capital murder of a person in a vehicle. He is being held without bond.
