CATOOSA COUNTY, Ga. (TCD) -- A 35-year-old man was handed a 20-year sentence this week for throwing his newborn son across the room and breaking several bones in his body.
The Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office said in a statement on Tuesday, March 8, that Michael Neal Stewart will serve the first 18 years of his sentence in the Georgia Department of Corrections. Stewart pleaded guilty March 2 to first-degree cruelty to children.
According to the District Attorney’s Office, Stewart was at home on July 14, 2021, while the child’s mother went back to work following her maternity leave. Stewart reportedly threw his 7-week-old son, severely injuring the little boy. He suffered a fractured skull, fractured vertebrae, and 22 broken bones, including in both of his legs.
The child’s mother and grandmother testified against Stewart at the sentencing hearing. Judge Ralph Van Pelt said, "I hope the victim has a full recovery and the rest of the family can put their lives back together and move on from this terrible crime."
