PEARL, Miss. (TCD) -- A 20-year-old mother was arrested after allegedly fatally throwing her 8-week-old daughter onto a road.
According to an initial press release from the Pearl Police Department, on Thursday, May 12, officers responded to 775 N. Bierdeman Road to a report of a woman who "had repeatedly and forcibly thrown a baby on the roadway." At the scene, officers reportedly found another woman holding the injured juvenile victim, and the Pearl Fire Department and Pafford Ambulance Service performed first aid on the infant.
Police say the mother, Makaylia Jolley, fled the scene on foot and ran into a nearby wooded area. Jolley was reportedly chased back toward Bierdeman Road and was taken into custody.
The infant was transported to the Children’s Hospital of Mississippi in critical condition. Jolley was originally arrested and charged with attempted murder and felony child abuse, according to police.
On Saturday, May 14, police announced the infant, Khalysie Jolley, died at approximately 4:33 p.m. Jolley’s charges were upgraded to capital murder and felony child abuse after her daughter’s death.
Jolley is reportedly scheduled to appear in court Tuesday, May 17.
Pearl Police Chief Dean Scott told WAPT-TV Jolley also has a son, who is currently in the care of his grandmother.
