COCOA, Fla. (TCD) -- A 17-year-old suspect stands accused of beating and trying to fatally stab his mother.
According to a news release from the Cocoa Police Department, on Tuesday, Nov. 29, detectives learned about a missing juvenile who ran off with her 17-year-old boyfriend after he allegedly tried to kill the victim at a home on Japonica Lane.
When officers arrived at the Japonica Lane home, the blood-covered victim was found lying on her back in the doorway of the laundry room, WKMG-TV reports. Police said the victim had been stabbed and beaten and was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Her nose was allegedly almost detached for her face.
According to a report obtained by WKMG, prior to being transported to the hospital, the victim took a breath and said, "Toby did this," referring to her son, Tobias Brewer.
Brewer’s friend and another male allegedly overheard loud bangs from the home, and the friend said he saw Brewer standing over his mother holding a pan as his mother said, "Toby, stop."
According to WKMG, Brewer fled the scene in a vehicle that belonged to his mother, and the two friends got into the victim’s other car, a Jeep Wrangler, and followed Brewer. The friend reportedly told authorities that they saw Brewer go to his girlfriend’s house and leave with her.
Using an emergency ping from the suspect’s cellphone, police eventually found Brewer, WKMG reports. Volusia County deputies tried to perform a traffic stop, but Brewer fled and eventually crashed into a wooded area. Brewer allegedly tried to flee with his girlfriend on foot, but he was later found and taken into custody.
In an interview, Brewer reportedly said he was angry with his mother because she was "constantly on his case" about cleaning his room. He eventually confessed to stabbing his mother numerous times and hitting her on the head with a frying pan until the handle broke, according to WKMG.
After the attack, Brewer allegedly took his mother’s vehicle keys and stole money from her purse.
Brewer was booked into the Brevard County Jail on Dec. 15 on charges of attempted murder, criminal conspiracy, flee w/disregard of safety to persons/prop, and grand theft auto, records show. He remains held on $17,000 bond.
