3-year-old boy in critical condition after his aunt allegedly pushes him into Lake Michigan

CHICAGO (TCD) -- A 3-year-old boy is reportedly in critical condition at a children’s hospital after he ended up in Lake Michigan and went into cardiac arrest.

Chicago Police Deputy Chief Gabriella Shemash spoke at a brief news conference Monday, Sept. 19, about the "unfortunate incident" that occurred at Chicago’s famous Navy Pier.

She said, "A little after 1 o’clock this afternoon, a young child fell into the water on the north side of Navy Pier. EMS responded and immediately pulled the child from the water and rendered aid. The child was rushed to Lurie Children’s Hospital and is currently undergoing treatment."

Shemash did not provide additional information, except that Area Three detectives were investigating.

Fire officials, however, told WGN-TV that the little boy was in "very critical condition." WGN reports the boy was in cardiac arrest when EMS officials rescued him.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the boy was with his aunt, and surveillance video allegedly shows her pushing him into the water. A female relative reportedly told police the boy had been "acting up."

The boy’s aunt is reportedly being questioned but has not yet been charged.
