NORWALK, Ohio (TCD) -- A pregnant mother died last week after her 2-year-old son allegedly got ahold of a loaded gun and shot her.
According to WOIO-TV, on Friday, June 16, at 1:11 p.m., 30-year-old Laura Ilg contacted the Norwalk Police Department and said her toddler found a firearm and accidentally shot her. Norwalk Police reportedly kicked in the door to Ilg’s home on Woodlawn Avenue to enter and found her in her room with her son. She was still conscious when police arrived.
Medics transported Ilg to Fisher-Titus Medical Center and delivered her child via emergency C-section, but the baby did not survive. Ilg, who was 33 weeks pregnant, also succumbed to her injuries. A Facebook post written by her husband said they named the child Talisen.
The Norwalk Reflector reports Ilg was shot in the back with a 9 mm gun police found at the home.
Norwalk Police Chief David Smith told WOIO Ilg reportedly did not know her son was in the room with her when she was shot and that the gun is usually hidden.
The boy is reportedly in his father’s custody.
Norwalk Police said in a statement, "The Norwalk Police Department offers our sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and all those affected by the tragic passing of the young mother and her unborn son. Words truly cannot express how heartbreaking this is, and we cannot imagine the pain and heartache you’re feeling."
