BROOKLYN, N.Y. (TCD) -- A Georgia woman who was arrested in Florida for allegedly shooting a Brooklyn mother execution-style is being charged with murder.
NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea tweeted Nov. 8 that the suspect in the Aug. 4 shooting in Crown Heights had been apprehended in Jacksonville, Florida. The suspect’s name was not immediately released at the time, but she was later identified as Claudia Banton, WNBC-TV reports. She reportedly also goes by the names Claudia Williams and Kiesha Brown.
The fatal shooting occurred at 9:41 p.m. Aug. 4 near 697 Franklin Ave., according to NYPD. Police allege Banton "shot a female in the head & leg then fled in a white vehicle." The 42-year-old victim, Delia Johnson, died at a local hospital. Police said she was shot in the back of the head.
The New York Daily News reported at the time that Johnson was sitting on a stoop on Franklin Avenue and Prospect Place chatting with friends when Banton allegedly opened fire. Johnson’s family reportedly believes Banton followed Johnson home after a funeral Johnson attended that day. Banton reportedly attended the funeral, too.
After Johnson was shot, video surveillance reportedly shows the assailant getting into a double-parked sedan and driving away.
According to WNBC, Johnson had a 17-year-old daughter and was an entrepreneur.
WPIX-TV reports Banton was taken into custody in Brooklyn on Thursday. She will reportedly be charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
