MEXICO, Mo. (TCD) -- A 43-year-old man who allegedly killed his mother last year and had active warrants out for his arrest was recently found dead.
According to a news release from the Mexico Department of Public Safety, in December 2022, Ruth Spears was found deceased in an apartment building that burned down.
The Mexico Department of Public Safety said there were two fires and that security camera footage showed a person believed to be Brandon Spears "about five blocks from Fairground Road, less than an hour after the second fire."
Additionally, camera footage reportedly showed Spears "attempting to get into parked cars or looking for shelter." The Department of Public Safety noted that the weather around the time of the incident was "dangerously cold."
On Jan. 26, the Audrain County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office filed charges against Spears in connection with the case for first-degree murder, first-degree arson, and armed criminal action. He remained at large.
According to the Department of Public Safety, on Sunday, March 19, at approximately 3:45 p.m., officials responded to the 1700 block of Fairground Road to a report of a human body found. There, authorities reportedly found Spears dead in an unlocked shed.
The Department of Public Safety said they were able to identify Spears based on his "clothing, tattoos, and general build."
The Boone County Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy, but the Department of Public Safety said there were no "visible traumatic injuries to the body and no apparent link between Spears and the owners of the shed."
Spears had been paroled from prison a week before his mother’s death, the Mexico Ledger reports.
