DES MOINES, Iowa (TCD) -- Six teenagers were arrested and charged with murder after one student was killed and two others were injured in a shooting outside of a local high school.
Des Moines Police said officers responded to a shooting call Monday, March 7, and located three victims. A 15-year-old male victim died at the hospital. A 16-year-old female and 18-year-old female were also hit and remain in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The Des Moines Register reports the shooting occurred at East High School.
According to police, the incident was a drive-by shooting and the victim that passed away was the "intended target." The other two victims were not. Des Moines Police arrested the suspects the same day and said they seized "multiple firearms" while executing search warrants.
WHO-TV reports the suspects include one 14-year-old, one 15-year-old, two 16-year-olds, and two 17-year-olds. They are reportedly all residents of Des Moines.
According to the Des Moines Register, the 15-year-old victim did not attend East High School but the other victims did. Sgt. Paul Parizek told the Des Moines Register the gunfire came from more than one person and at least one car.
Des Moines Public Schools Superintendent Thomas Ahart said in a statement, "We live in an era when shootings in and near schools have become too common. Our staff and students are forced to train for these incidents and the trauma associated with the repeated drills and incidents will remain with them for years to come."
Ahart's comment continued, "It’s unfortunate that our state and our country have become a place where firearms are far too easily accessible. We remain committed to protecting our students and staff, but real change to gun laws and access would go a long way to help us."
