PORTLAND, Ore. (TCD) -- A 71-year-old woman who wrote a blog post called "How to Murder Your Husband" was found guilty this week of killing her husband in 2018.
The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday, May 25, that a jury convicted Nancy Crampton Brophy of second-degree murder with a firearm. Her trial kicked off in April as prosecutors argued she drove to her husband’s workplace at the Oregon Culinary Institute on June 2, 2018, and shot him twice.
Surveillance footage reportedly placed her at the scene before her husband, Daniel Brophy, arrived. She is reportedly seen leaving the Oregon Culinary Institute shortly after he was shot.
Some of Brophy’s co-workers reportedly found his body and called police. Crampton Brophy reportedly returned to the scene in the same vehicle previously seen in the surveillance video. She reportedly told law enforcement officials she was at home when her husband was killed.
Prior to her husband’s shooting, Crampton Brophy bought a Glock 9 mm gun, and three days after he died, she tried collecting her husband’s life insurance policy.
According to KOIN-TV, Brophy was shot in the heart. Investigators, however, never found parts from the gun used in the shooting. KOIN reports the couple was deep in debt because they recently took out $35,000 from his 401K in order to pay some credit card debt and their mortgage.
During the trial, Crampton Brophy reportedly argued she had a "memory hole" on the day of her husband’s death. She said she could have driven in her minivan to the area near the Culinary Institute in order to write but does not remember the exact events. One psychologist testified tests she conducted on Crampton Brophy show she is not a psychopath.
KOIN reports she testified, "I know I didn’t go in the building because I know I didn’t kill Dan. I know that for a fact."
Brophy’s son said the verdict gives the family "closure" about what happened because it is important for them to “start to move on and always remember my father,” as well as grieve.
The District Attorney’s Office says Crampton Brophy will be sentenced June 9.
