OGILVIE, Minn. (TCD) -- A 42-year-old man accused of killing his grandmother with a hatchet allegedly told authorities she had assaulted him as a child.
On Sept. 13, shortly after 12:30 p.m., Kanabec County Sheriff's deputies performed a welfare check at a home and discovered a deceased person, according to a news release from the Kanabec County Sheriff's Office. Deputies said the victim died of "obvious homicidal violence."
The suspect, Dustin Tinklenberg, was arrested and booked into Kanabec County Jail for second-degree murder, records show.
According to the complaint obtained by WCCO-TV, family members stopped by the home to pick something up, and one of them reportedly heard shouting coming from inside the residence. The family member went back into her vehicle and allegedly saw Tinklenberg yelling on the deck.
Tinklenberg reportedly told investigators he is homeless but sometimes stays with his grandmother, Stella Anderson. According to WCCO, Tinklenberg said his grandmother assaulted him as a child, and she allegedly continued to harass him. On the day of the fatal attack, Tinklenberg told authorities he "lost it," the complaint alleges.
Tinklenberg reportedly grabbed a hatchet that was kept in one of the bedrooms and attacked his grandmother. A day before the incident, on Monday, Sept. 12, he allegedly visited another home and showed the property owners a double-bladed hatchet believed to have been used in the attack.
According to WCCO, Anderson died from multiple sharp force injuries to the head.
If convicted, Tinklenberg could reportedly face a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison. He remains held in the Kanabec County Jail without bail.
