FLORIDA KEYS (TCD) --
A Florida man was arrested after he allegedly ingested four bags of heroin, then jumped out of an ambulance when first-responders attempted to hospitalize him on Monday night.
A Monroe County Sheriff's deputy responded to a report of a disturbance at a residence on the 1400 block of Merelyn Lane on Big Pine Key at 5:22 p.m. Monday.
The caller told the deputy that Ira Kawzinsky, 35, found out there was a warrant out for his arrest and began acting erratically. The deputy found Kawzinsky "incoherent" in a bedroom in the house, with a syringe, spoon and heroin also in the room.
Kawzinsky started convulsing outside the residence, and two deputies gave him a dose of Narcan to treat a narcotic overdose. Paramedics arrived to transport Kawzinsky to a hospital.
The ambulance drove to Lower Keys Medical Center with one deputy following. The sheriff's office said the ambulance stopped suddenly in a center turn lane, and Kawzinksy jumped out and ran away. The deputy ran after him and called for assistance.
Sheriff's deputies, U.S. Border Patrol agents with a K9 Unit, Florida Highway Patrol and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation officers searched a perimeter for Kawzinsky, and he was caught a short time later.
Kawzinsky was transported in a deputy's patrol car to the hospital and reportedly said he had ingested four bags of heroin before the deputy came to the house. Kawzinsky was medically cleared at the hospital and booked.
Kawzinsky was arrested and charged with violating probation, resisting arrest, heroin possession, and possession of drug paraphernalia, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said.
