BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. (TCD) -- A 24-year-old man was recently sentenced to over two decades in prison after kidnapping and torturing a man in 2021.
According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota, on Dec. 20, 2021, Jose Angel Chapa-Aguilera lured a man into a home to confront him about a drug debt. Two women drove the victim to the home and asked him to come inside, where Chapa-Aguilera was waiting, WCCO-TV reports.
Chapa-Aguilera reportedly pulled out a gun, "ordered the man to the ground, tied his hands behind his back, and proceeded to beat and torture the victim for hours using a heated knife and a pipe, due to a perceived drug debt."
The Attorney’s Office said Chapa-Aguilera demanded money from the victim, and he barricaded him inside a crawlspace under the residence.
Eventually, the victim was reportedly able to escape and call for help. A neighbor told WCCO that the victim’s eye was severely swollen and the size of a golf ball.
According to the Attorney’s Office, "The victim suffered extensive injuries, including numerous burns, broken ribs, a large laceration above his eye and required a blood transfusion."
During a search of the home, authorities reportedly recovered around 3 pounds of methamphetamine.
A month after kidnapping the victim, on Jan. 7, Chapa-Aguilera was reportedly found in a purple camouflage Humvee in the Twin Cities, and a high-speed pursuit ensued. The Attorney’s Office said officers were able to disable the vehicle and pull Chapa-Aguilera over. Officers reportedly found a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun and several rounds of 9 mm ammunition.
According to the Attorney’s Office, Chapa-Aguilera pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and one count of possession with the intent to distribute methamphetamine on Sept. 6.
On Thursday, Dec. 15, he was sentenced to 289 months in prison followed by 10 years of supervised release.
According to WCCO, the two women who drove the victim to the home were charged as co-defendants in separate complaints.
