Woman accused of fatally shooting her boyfriend after having sex on playground

INDIANAPOLIS (TCD) -- A 32-year-old woman faces child neglect and other charges after she allegedly left her young kids at home to have sex with her boyfriend outside, which then involved her allegedly shooting him during an argument.

Marion County Jail records show Tonika Miller was taken into custody June 10 for reckless homicide and two counts of neglect of a dependent in connection with the shooting that reportedly occurred at the end of May.

According to WXIN-TV, on May 27 at approximately 2 a.m., Indianapolis Police Department officers responded to the 10100 block of Tinton Court and found the victim, Dashawn Roscoe, suffering a gunshot wound to his face. Miller was reportedly trying to put pressure on the wound to aid the bleeding, but Roscoe was pronounced dead at the scene.

Miller reportedly told detectives that she and Roscoe had been in a relationship for about five years and lived together in a one-bedroom apartment with their 3-year-old and 9-month-old children. Court documents cited by WXIN say Miller told police she put the children down to sleep at 10:30 p.m. She and Roscoe were in their living room when Roscoe allegedly proposed having sex on a blanket in a nearby playground.

According to court documents cited by the the Indianapolis Star, Miller said she felt comfortable leaving their kids at home because "they didn’t feel like it was that far away." Miller also reportedly said she thought she and Roscoe "would not be gone for very long."

WXIN reports the couple reportedly left their apartment at 12:50 a.m., and Miller allegedly said she brought her gun with her because it was so late at night.

According to the court documents, after having sex, Miller and Roscoe allegedly got into a fight about Roscoe cheating on her. She allegedly left Roscoe at the playground and went back to the apartment at 1:48 a.m. Miller was inside the unit for about a minute before going back outside to the playground.

Miller got into her car and found Roscoe outside the apartment building's leasing office, the Indianapolis Star reports. The two reportedly got into another fight and Roscoe allegedly pushed Miller as she got out of the car. Miller, who was holding her gun, allegedly shoved him in return, and the weapon went off.

The autopsy determined Roscoe died from a gunshot wound to the head.

Miller is being held without bond.
