DETROIT (TCD) -- A 41-year-old man allegedly set his pregnant girlfriend on fire after the two got into an argument, leaving her with third-degree burns.
Detroit Police told WJBK-TV that Devonne Marsh and his girlfriend, who remained unnamed, had an argument at their residence near Packard and Outer Drive. Marsh allegedly poured lighter fluid on the 26-year-old and lit her on fire. According to WJBK, the woman is 6.5 months pregnant with twins.
Detroit Police Commander Michael McGinnis told WJBK the woman suffered "incredibly traumatic injuries." She reportedly has third-degree burns on 60 percent of her body and is in critical condition.
"They don’t even have a chance. [The twins] don’t even have a fighting chance at life," said Sgt. Kyla Williams, who runs Detroit Police Department’s Domestic Violence Unit. The victim was reportedly afraid to report the incident because she felt scared of retaliation.
McGinnis said he hope Marsh will stay in custody throughout the trial process "so that the victim can heal without the fear of any type of retribution."
WJBK reports his bond was set at $50,000 at 10 percent, meaning he can get out if he pays $5,000.
According to Wayne County Jail records, Marsh was booked on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, firearm possession of loaded firearm in or upon a vehicle, and assault/bodily harm less than murder.
