NEW ORLEANS (TCD) -- A 27-year-old father was arrested for allegedly shooting his 1-year-old son on New Year’s Day.
According to a news release from the New Orleans Police Department, on Jan. 1 at approximately 3:20 p.m., authorities learned that a 1-year-old infant arrived at a local hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. Upon further investigation, police say the shooting occurred at the intersection of Decatur and Spain streets.
Police say that detectives identified Corey Davis, the infant’s father, as the "perpetrator in this incident, and a warrant was obtained for his arrest." Davis was located on Jan. 2 at a location in the Fifth District and arrested without incident.
According to police, Davis faces multiple charges, including first-degree attempted murder, second-degree cruelty to a juvenile, domestic abuse aggravated assault, aggravated criminal damage to property, felon in possession of a firearm, illegal use of a weapon, and theft of a motor vehicle.
New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Shaun Ferguson said in a statement, "This is another unfortunate incidence of violence in our city that was found to be domestic in nature, and also where a child — in this case, a 1-year-old infant shot by his own father — was the victim of a tragic, senseless and violent crime. As I’ve said before, practicing self-responsibility and implementing proper conflict resolution skills can help to avoid tragic situations like this."
Police did not disclose the current status of the child’s condition.
