Upstate New York server charged with stealing $50K in lottery tickets from restaurant

HAMBURG, N.Y. (TCD) --
An Upstate New York restaurant server accused of stealing lottery tickets from her workplace was indicted last week on one count of third-degree grand larceny.
Orchard Park resident Danielle Bush, 30, worked as a server at a Hamburg restaurant. Bush is accused of allegedly taking gaming tickets and placing fraudulent bets from June 2019 to February 2020, according to the Erie County District Attorney’s Office.
Bush “allegedly took gaming tickets and placed fraudulent bets while processing other bets placed by customers for a number of games of chance, including Quick Draw, Mega Millions and Power Ball. Her alleged actions resulted in an estimated total loss of approximately $50,000.00 to the restaurant,” the Erie County D.A.’s Office said.
The restaurant’s owner found the alleged theft during an audit of monthly billing statements from the New York State Lotto, the D.A.’s Office said.
“Abnormally high gaming activity, unusual betting amounts and unique betting patterns” were detected in the statements. The activity corresponds with Bush’s work schedules at the time, the D.A.’s Office said.
Bush was charged on May 5 with one count of grand larceny in the third degree. She’s set to return to court on June 7, 2021. Bush, who was free on her own recognizance, faces a possible maximum sentence of seven years in prison if found guilty.
