Nevada man found guilty of shooting fiancée and hitting landlord in attempted murder-suicide

WASHOE COUNTY, Nev. (TCN) -- A 33-year-old man faces up to 60 years in prison for trying to fatally shoot his fiancée in a suspected failed murder-suicide.

The Washoe County District Attorney's Office announced June 21 that a jury convicted Wacey Chabot of attempted murder, domestic battery with the use of a deadly weapon causing substantial bodily harm, and battery with the use of a deadly weapon. Chabot is expected to be sentenced on Aug. 19.

According to prosecutors, in January 2023, Sparks Police responded to Wolverine Way after a landlord called law enforcement to report that Chabot injured him and shot Chabot's fiancée. Officers found Chabot outside a travel trailer, where he failed to comply with commands. The defendant reportedly went back inside the trailer, exited, and continued to ignore orders. The district attorney's office said an officer eventually Tased Chabot and took him into custody.

Inside the trailer, officers reportedly found Chabot's 36-year-old fiancée with a gunshot wound to her face. She sustained multiple facial fractures, including to her nasal cavity and jaw. Prosecutors said Chabot shot his fiancée in the face before striking his landlord over the head with the firearm. The landlord suffered lacerations and needed stitches as a result. Both victims survived their injuries.

Deputy District Attorney Jenna Garcia argued at trial that Chabot "intentionally lured both victims back to the property that evening," and he watched them enter the trailer armed with a firearm. Prosecutors believe Chabot planned to kill the victims and himself. Moments before the shooting and battery, Chabot reportedly told his fiancée and landlord, "All of us are going to die tonight."

The district attorney's office said, "Luckily the other man was able to wrestle the gun away and run from the trailer to call for help."
