ANNAPOLIS, Md. (TCD) -- Police arrested a 43-year-old man on several counts of murder and attempted murder after he allegedly shot and killed three people and wounded three others during a disagreement at a block party over the weekend.
On Sunday, June 11, at 7:50 p.m., Annapolis Police responded to a shooting call on the 1000 block of Paddington Place off Edgewood Road and found six victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Three were declared dead at the scene and three others were transported to area hospitals.
The people who were hospitalized are now in stable condition. Police identified the victims who died as 55-year-old Nicholas Mireles, 27-year-old Mario Antonio Mireles Ruiz, and 25-year-old Christian Marlon Segovia.
Officers detained the suspect, Charles Robert Smith. As of Monday, the Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney’s Office charged him with three counts of second-degree murder, three counts of attempted second-degree murder, three counts of first-degree assault, and use of a firearm in the commission of a violent crime. Police reportedly located a semi-automatic handgun and long gun in his possession.
He’s being held without bond.
According to charging documents cited by NBC Washington, Mario Mireles was hosting a party Sunday night. Smith’s mother reportedly contacted Annapolis' parking enforcement because someone’s car was blocking her driveway. Mario Mireles went over to Smith’s house to talk with the mom, and the two allegedly got into an argument.
Smith arrived back at his house and allegedly confronted Mario Mireles about what happened. He reportedly went in his home and began shooting through a window, fatally striking Mario Mireles, his father, Nicholas, and Segovia.
At a press conference Monday, June 12, Annapolis Police Chief Ed Jackson said his department is not "ruling anything out" in terms of potentially viewing the shooting as a hate crime.
He said, "Ostensibly, our suspect is a white male and the three victims are Latino. But we can’t draw any inferences from that. We have to look at every possible angle."
