SALT LAKE CITY (TCD) -- A man who reportedly ran over his wife in an airport parking lot right as they returned from vacation was sentenced to prison in connection with her death.
KUTV-TV reports a judge handed Shawn Sturgeon a sentence of one to 20 years after Sturgeon pleaded guilty to second-degree vehicular homicide while using drugs or alcohol and domestic violence in the presence of a child.
KSTU-TV reports Sturgeon pleaded guilty in July.
Sturgeon reportedly said at the sentencing, "I am fully responsible for my irresponsibility as a father and husband in the events that unfolded on April 4, 2022. My selfishness of over-consuming on the flight back from a cherished family vacation caused me to black out and, most importantly, caused the death of a true angel, Charlotte Sturgeon."
Sturgeon said he would "never forgive myself for what has happened, but I will spend the rest of my life trying to make up for it."
Sturgeon, his wife Charlotte, and their young child reportedly were in the Salt Lake City Airport parking lot having just returned from a trip when he reportedly ran her over. Police said officials tried to save 28-year-old Charlotte’s life and transported her to a hospital, where she died.
He was arrested for automobile homicide — criminal negligence DUI of alcohol/drugs.
According to KUTV, Sturgeon’s blood alcohol content was about three times the legal limit when he ran over his wife and the two had reportedly been arguing in the parking lot.
