Memphis woman allegedly shot salesman because she thought he was a hit man

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (TCD) -- A former Sheriff’s Office captain was taken into custody this week for allegedly shooting a pest control salesman because she believed him to be a hit man.
On Wednesday, Sept. 27, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said detectives were investigating a shooting at a residence on the 1600 block of Brimhill Cove in Cordova near Memphis. Shelby County Fire Department officials transported one man to a local hospital in critical condition, and one woman was detained.
According to the affidavit cited by WATN-TV, Monica Johnson and her father were reportedly in the living room when she noticed on her security camera an "unknown subject" with a hoodie walking to her door. She reportedly thought he was carrying an assault rifle, so she ran to the attic and said, "They’re here."
Johnson allegedly fired at the "unknown subject," who turned out to be a salesman carrying an iPad. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the torso. Investigators reportedly found the firearm in the attic’s crawlspace.
Deputies arrested Johnson and booked her into the Shelby County Jail for aggravated assault. She posted $4,000 bond the next day.
She reportedly believed it was a hit man because her son, who is currently incarcerated for child rape, told her a local gang might be after her.
Johnson previously served as a captain in the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office but was fired after she was charged in 2016 for coercion of witnesses and official misconduct. WATN reports the charges reportedly related to her son’s criminal case.
