HUDSON COUNTY, N.J. (TCD) -- Officials are searching for a 21-year-old woman they say "gravely injured" her 3-year-old daughter while staying at a motel.
In a March 4 statement, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office said Shaqwana Baker brought her daughter to NYU Langone Hospital on Jan. 23 with "life threatening injuries." The little girl was then transferred to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Bellevue Hospital and continues to receive treatment there.
According to the statement, an investigation reportedly determined the girl suffered from abuse while staying at a motel in North Bergen with Baker and her boyfriend, Edward Smith. The Prosecutor’s Office described the girl’s injuries as "permanent and life altering," though they did not elaborate on details.
Smith was reportedly arrested Feb. 24, but he was already in custody at the Hudson County Correctional Facility for other charges. Baker, whose last known address is in the Bronx, and Smith are both being charged with aggravated assault and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Baker remains on the run.
