Florida woman charged with shooting 16-year-old girl in WaWa argument

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WJXT) -- A woman was arrested Sunday in connection with the shooting death of a teenager Saturday night outside a Wawa convenience store on the city's Westside, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.
The shooting happened about 11:30 p.m. Saturday at a Wawa on Wilson Boulevard. Teneria McClendon, 16, suffered a life-threatening gunshot wound and died at Orange Park Medical Center. Shaetavia Cooper, 23, is charged with second-degree murder.
McClendon's family said she and Cooper did not know each other. The arrest report said McClendon and Cooper “became embroiled in a verbal argument concerning a perceived slight as they both stood in the convenience store's checkout line. As the verbal argument escalated inside the convenience store, the victim spat in the direction of the suspect.”
The two went outside, and McClendon was shot in the neck, WJXT-TV reports.
Cooper had her first appearance before a judge on Monday and was ordered held without bond. Her arraignment is set for Aug. 11.
WTLV-TV reports the family disputes that account, saying Teneria McClendon and three of her cousins were in the car waiting for her mom, who was inside paying. They said Cooper pulled up in her car and almost hit them. Family members said they told the woman she almost hit them and the woman jumped out of the car and yelled at them.
WTLV-TV reports that according to the family, McClendon's mother, who's pregnant, came out and told them to talk to her, not Teneria. The family said when Cooper tried to fight the woman, the teen stood up for her mom and the woman shot the 16-year-old.
