DENTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (TCN) -- A 60-year-old man is in custody after allegedly strangling and beating his elderly mother to death over the weekend.
On Saturday, July 27, at approximately midnight, the Roscommon County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call from an elderly woman who said her son had repeatedly assaulted her and she believed he was going to kill her. Deputies discovered the victim, 95-year-old Clara Miko, on the floor inside her garage apartment.
According to the sheriff’s office, Miko was "badly injured" and could not move. She reportedly explained what had happened, and deputies helped emergency personnel prepare her to be transported to a hospital.
Authorities located the suspect, John Miko, inside the main house. He was intoxicated and did not cooperate with deputies. He was reportedly on active probation for a previous domestic assault at the time. Officials took him into custody and booked him into the Roscommon County Jail.
The sheriff’s office said Clara Miko died from her injuries at Grayling Munson Hospital later that morning.
On July 31, John Miko appeared in court and was arraigned on charges of first-degree vulnerable adult abuse, assault by strangulation, and first-degree homicide. He remains held in the Roscommon County Jail on $1 million bond.
