OCONEE COUNTY, S.C. (TCD) -- Investigators discovered the remains of a missing woman this week and apprehended a 35-year-old man on suspicion of killing her and disposing of her body in North Carolina.
On Friday, Dec. 15, the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on North Lake Drive to perform a welfare check on Dustin Turpin after he allegedly "made comments that he had killed an adult female." Once there, deputies observed Turpin in possession of a firearm, but they said there was no evidence of a crime. Turpin was transported to a hospital for further evaluation.
On Tuesday, Jan. 2, the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office notified the Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office about possible human remains in their jurisdiction in Sapphire, North Carolina. Transylvania County deputies and Oconee County investigators searched the vicinity of Sapphire and Whitewater, North Carolina, and discovered the remains later that day, at around 9:30 p.m. Investigators believe the remains are those of 29-year-old Kandace Adams, a missing woman out of Seneca, South Carolina.
The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office alleges Turpin fatally hit Adams in the head and disposed of her body. Prior to the alleged attack, Turpin had been convicted of a crime and subsequently isn’t allowed to own a firearm.
Turpin was arrested on charges of murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was transported from the Charleston County Detention Center to the Oconee County Detention Center, where he remains held. His bond has not yet been set.
