Michigan parents arrested after 1-month-old abused 'from head to toe'

DEARBORN, Mich. (TCD) -- A couple faces charges after their 1-month-old child suffered serious injuries from suspected child abuse.
According to a news release from the Dearborn Police Department, on Sept. 29, police and fire department personnel were notified after the victim was brought to a hospital with visible injuries. Police said the injuries were "suspicious in nature," and it was determined the infant had suffered physical abuse.
Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin told WJBK-TV the victim showed signs of abuse "from head to toe." The infant reportedly suffered bruising and broken ribs, and it appeared she had been strangled.
The child’s mother brought her to a pediatrician and "got nervous" when officers arrived, WJBK reports.
Upon further investigation, the infant’s parents, Amy Taulbee and Murtadha Almeamaar, were reportedly arrested and charged with first-degree abuse. According to police, Almeamaar was also charged with a habitual offender second offense and his bond was set at $250,000. Taulbee’s bond was reportedly set at $100,000. Both parents have been ordered to wear a GPS tether if they bond out.
Shahin told WJBK authorities believe drug abuse may have played a role in the alleged abuse. The parents reportedly have a history with drugs.
As of Oct. 2, police said the 1-month-old is still being treated for critical injuries at Children’s Hospital but is in stable condition.
In a statement, Shahin said, "This is a terrible crime that has impacted everybody involved, from the First Responders on scene, to the Investigators who built the case, to the Medical Professionals who continue to provide care for this poor child. It’s unfathomable to think that a parent could allegedly cause harm to their own child, so I appreciate all of the hard work that has gone into ensuring that those responsible are held accountable."
