LOS ANGELES (TCD) -- A Southern California man was taken into custody this week after he allegedly broke into a woman's home, attacked her with a hammer, shot her, and kidnapped her child.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, on Aug. 7 at 10:35 p.m., deputies responded to a call about a person with a gun near 11th Street East and Avenue R in Palmdale, and when they arrived, they reportedly saw a suspect "holding a firearm to the head of a child."
Deputies reportedly told the man to drop the gun, and he followed orders.
During their investigation, deputies learned a woman was walking into her apartment when the suspect allegedly approached her and said he was chased by someone. The woman refused him entry, but he reportedly "forced himself into the residence" and "attempted to assault" her with a hammer.
She reportedly ran into her bedroom and retrieved a handgun, but the man allegedly took it out of her hands and shot her in the face. The woman reportedly "pled for her life" as the suspect "turned his attention to a child in the residence."
The child’s father reportedly chased after the suspect, and the suspect pointed the gun at him.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, the suspect was not known to the victims. The woman was taken to a hospital and is reportedly in stable condition. KABC-TV reports the mom moved her head when she was shot, so she sustained a flesh wound rather than a more serious injury. The child was also reportedly not injured.
He has been booked on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, home invasion, and child abduction.
